Scarf is now recruiting front-of-house trainees for a free, 3 day ‘Tasting Plate’ hospitality short course, running in partnership with Inner North Community Foundation. This is a great opportunity for young people from refugee/migrant backgrounds and young people seeking protection to get a ‘taste’ of hospitality – they’ll be learning from passionate hospitality professionals in real restaurants. There are 16 trainee places available and the program will run in Melbourne’s Inner North.
Tasting Plate ’19 runs on Tuesday 3, Wednesday 4 and Friday 6 September 2019. Training runs from 10.00am – 4.00pm each day, and there will be a free lunch provided. The course also includes the opportunity to gain paid work experience at one or two ‘Pop Up’ Scarf Dinners, running in September at a renowned restaurant in Fitzroy.
During the ‘Tasting Plate’ program, trainees will:
- learn basic hospitality service skills (including how to carry three plates, take orders, follow an order of service, set tables and carry wine glasses)
- learn bar basics (learn about different types of alcohol, how to pour wine, etc)
- take part in ‘customer service confidence’ training
- Complete their RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) certification
- learn how to write a resume for hospitality jobs
- practice their interview techniques with real hospitality managers
- receive an information session on ‘work rights in Australia’
Tasting Plate graduates are then given the opportunity to put their new skills into practice, with paid work experience during one or two ‘Pop Up’ Scarf Dinners (pay in line with Restaurant Industry Award 2010) in September. This experience, and a reference, can be added to their new resumes which have been created during the program, allowing them to demonstrate recent, local work experience.

Granted they are eligible, participants will be offered interviews for the program on a first come, first served basis. There will be an initial phone call to confirm eligibility, then a face to face interview with Scarf staff. Please note that Scarf is a small organisation with limited time to process referrals. – eligibility (must be aged 18 – 28 years old, currently seeking asylum or from a refugee/migrant background. Preference will be given to those who live, work, study or recreate/socialise/worship in Melbourne’s Inner North*)
